Video Summary
Dr. Glenn Marin’s webinar reviews the legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities of Georgia dental professionals, following a 2022 law requiring continuing education in these areas. He distinguishes personal values and morals from professional ethics, emphasizing that ethical conduct guides everyday decisions and protects patients, practitioners, and public trust.

Dentists and dental hygienists should put patients’ interests first, respect their dignity and choices, protect confidentiality, maintain competence, cooperate with colleagues, and act honestly. Accurate records are essential, and patients are entitled to access their records; delaying their release can lead to penalties. Providers should communicate treatment options, risks, benefits, and costs clearly, obtain consent, and respect a patient’s right to decline treatment—including choosing to do nothing.

Marin warns against misleading advertising, deceptive billing, and recommending services for the practice’s benefit rather than the patient’s. Patients should be treated fairly regardless of appearance or personal circumstances, while providers keep personal beliefs and biases out of professional care. Dentists must maintain licensure, work within their competence, and refer when appropriate.

He also stresses that risk management is not the same as ethical care: decisions should reflect the patient’s interests and preferences, not merely reduce risk for the practice. Inappropriate billing and financial disputes are common sources of complaints to the Georgia Board of Dentistry, which investigates concerns to protect patients and uphold the profession.
