Video Summary
The Georgia Dental Association presented the first session of a four-part DEA MATE Act Continuing Education Program, led by Dr. William Claytor, Jr., an expert in dental addiction counseling and substance use disorders (SUD). This session provided an overview of addiction, its terminology, and relevant clinical considerations for dental professionals.

Dr. Claytor emphasized that addiction is a chronic, relapsing, primary brain disease with physical, psychological, and social impacts. The modern term “substance use disorder” (SUD) replaces “addiction,” with severity categorized as mild, moderate, or severe based on DSM-5 criteria. Co-occurring disorders, combining mental illness and SUD, complicate diagnosis and treatment. Genetics and environment are significant factors in addiction risk.

He discussed brain neurobiology, highlighting dopamine pathways involved in reward and the impact of drugs on brain structure and function. Cannabis use was addressed, noting increasing potency and risks, including cannabis hyperemesis syndrome and cardiovascular effects. The reality of contaminated street cannabis with fentanyl was stressed as a grave public health issue.

Clinical approaches include sensitive patient interviewing, screening methods like SBIRT, CAGE, and AUDIT, and recognizing physical and behavioral signs of substance use in dental patients. Dr. Claytor outlined the importance of cooperation with medical providers for patients on medication-assisted treatments (MAT) such as Suboxone (buprenorphine), methadone, and naltrexone, emphasizing evolving guidelines and careful management.

He briefly covered emergency treatment for opioid overdoses using naloxone (Narcan), noting its growing accessibility and dosing challenges due to potent synthetic opioids. Dr. Claytor recommended the ADA’s “Practical Guide to Substance Use Disorders and Safe Prescribing” as a valuable clinical resource.

Overall, this session aimed to equip dental professionals with foundational knowledge on substance use disorders, patient communication, and emerging treatments, underscoring their role in addressing addiction within dental care settings.
