Video Summary
Patrick O’Rourke, founder of Practice Quotient, gave an overview of the dental insurance landscape and how it affects dental practices. He explained that healthcare financing in the U.S. has evolved around three payment sources: commercial dental insurance, direct patient payment, and government programs like Medicaid and Medicare.

He traced dental insurance back to WWII wage freezes, when employers began offering benefits to attract workers, eventually making dental coverage a standard employee benefit. He emphasized that employers, not insurers alone, drive coverage design, including maximums and network choices.

A major focus was the growing complexity of PPO networks, umbrella leasing arrangements, and “claims repricing,” where the same insurer may pay very different fees depending on which network is used. He warned that this can significantly reduce reimbursement and may happen without practices realizing it.

Patrick also discussed legislative trends, including fee capping, loss ratio laws, assignment of benefits protections, and how Georgia compares favorably to many states in protecting providers.

His main advice: know your numbers, monitor your fee schedules, review contracts regularly, and make strategic decisions based on data—not emotion. Practices should reassess their insurance strategy at least every year or two.
